How to Make an Effective Lead Magnet

How to Make an Effective Lead Magnet

Most people never read what's free.

They download the guide, it sits in their inbox, and they forget who sent it. That's not a lead magnet working. That's a lead magnet collecting dust.

This post is for owners of service businesses: trades, home services, coaches and consultants. You'll learn how to make a lead magnet that actually works, the three jobs every effective one does, and how to know which one your market wants before you spend money on it.

What is an effective lead magnet?

An effective lead magnet does three jobs.

  1. People want it enough to give you their contact information for it.
  2. It's simple to understand and simple to use: 3 to 5 steps, digested and put to work in about 60 seconds.
  3. It leads them into the next step of your offer: book a call, buy the next thing, request a quote.

Miss any one of those and it stops working. If nobody wants it, you get no leads. If it's too long, nobody uses it and nobody remembers you. If it doesn't lead anywhere, you gave away something good and got nothing back.

How do you make people want your lead magnet?

Solve the problem they already have, in the words they already use.

People trade their contact information for an answer to a question that's on their mind right now. Not your question. Theirs.

That's harder to guess than it sounds. A personal trainer who works with active adults 55 and older wanted a free guide. We were sure the winning message would be about safety. We wrote 20 titles, and 8 of them were about safety, injuries or joints. Our favorite was "Will your body let you keep doing what you love?"

Then we put them in front of real people. Every safety title landed in the middle. Our favorite came in dead last.

The winner was "Can your body pass these 5 strength tests?" It wasn't a promise. It was a challenge. Nobody on our side would have picked it.

How long should a lead magnet be?

Short enough that someone can understand it and use it in about 60 seconds.

That usually means 3 to 5 steps on one page. Each step starts with an action word, like Check, Ask, Look or Write, and each one is something the reader can do today.

Nothing long. No 40 page ebooks. When your lead magnet gives someone a fast, real win, two things happen. They trust you a little more, and they want the next step.

Here's a simple test. Read it through your customer's eyes and ask: Would they save it? Could they use it today? Would they share it with a friend? If the only one who benefits is your business, rewrite it.

What should happen after someone uses your lead magnet?

They should know exactly what to do next.

Every effective lead magnet ends with one clear next step into your offer. For a roofer, that might be "Book a free inspection." For a coach, "Book a 20 minute call." For a product business, "Get the starter kit."

One step. Your name, your phone number, your website. Don't make them hunt for how to work with you.

What can a lead magnet be?

Almost anything. A checklist, a guide, a scorecard, a script, a cheat sheet, a short video, a webinar, a mini course.

There's an endless number of lead magnets you could make. That's the problem. Every one of them is a guess until your market tells you which one it wants.

How do you know which lead magnet your market wants?

You validate it. You let your market pick before you build.

A gym owner who started selling peptides had a lead magnet: a guide explaining each peptide and what it did. It sounded helpful. But his ideal customers didn't want to hand over their information so they could sit down and study.

Validation showed they wanted something else. They wanted to know one thing: how well am I aging? So instead of a guide, he got a six question aging scorecard, a short personal report, and a recommendation that led straight into his offer. That's the version that brought the leads in.

That's what our Lead Engine Accelerator does. A small paid test puts your options in front of your real market. Your market picks the problem that matters most and the words that make them act. Then we create your lead magnet from that validated data, along with the page and the follow up behind it.

Can I build a lead magnet for free?

Yes. We built a free tool called Fire Starter.

It walks you through what makes a lead magnet effective, then helps you build a one page lead magnet in your own colors, with your logo, in about 5 minutes. It checks your page against the rules above before you download it.

Fire Starter shows you how to build an effective lead magnet. The Lead Engine Accelerator tells you which one your market will actually trade their contact information for.

The short version

An effective lead magnet does three jobs. People want it. They can use it in about 60 seconds. And it leads them to your next step.

You can build those all day with Fire Starter. To know which one your market wants, test it with the Lead Engine Accelerator.
